Google’s Chromecast in the Test

Great potential meets straightforward to use, and a browser bonus – the range of apps still needs to grow

For months, rumors circulated that Google was working on a successor to its Nexus Q, which quickly crush after numerous criticisms. But what recently present was still a surprise for most people. With the Chromecast, the company delivers an HDMI stick that is the easiest way to bring online content to the television for just 35 US dollars. At least that is the company’s promise.

TEST

Whether you can redeem this and what else the Chromecast offers, examine in detail below. Before that, one more note: The Chromecast is currently only available in the USA; the WebStandard has been imported directly from there via its import. When and whether Chromecast will officially come to Austria is a question that Google does not want to comment on at the moment.

Occur

From the outside, the Chromecast looks like a giant USB stick. The dimensions of 72 x 35 x 12 mm and the weight of 34 grams confirm this impression. The hardware setup is limited to plugging the device into a free HDMI slot on the television and attaching the USB power supply. The latter is necessary. Contrary to various reports circulating, the Chromecast does not work even with HDMI 1.4 ports without an external power supply, as these do not provide enough power. The power can drawn either directly from the socket or any USB port on the TV.

Extended

Due to the size of the Chromecast, it could happen with some devices that there is not enough space to plug it in. In this case, an HDMI extension cable includes, which, if necessary, can also serve as an antenna to strengthen the WLAN reception. Speaking of WiFi: The Chromecast only supports 2.4 GHz networks (802.11 b / g / n), so the 5 GHz spectrum cannot share with the device.

Android

And then there is also its Chromecast app for Android, with which the setup also carries out. Its installation is advisable at all, as one or the other setting complete with it. In addition to switching to a different WLAN, it also possible to restart or even perform a factory reset in this way. An iOS app with congruent functionality is to follow shortly.

Streaming

In principle, there are two different modes of use of the Chromecast, the first of which is practically identical to the approach of the Nexus Q and focuses entirely on streaming online content. Apps that support Chromecast – and we’re talking about both mobile and browser apps here – automatically offer an additional button to forward the output to the television. The actual app then becomes a kind of remote control for what is happening on the TV. With smartphones and tablets, the volume can even regulate directly using the corresponding buttons on the mobile device.
